Continuing Education Opportunities

Radiology Grand Rounds

  • Held several Tuesdays throughout the academic year from 12:15pm – 1:15pm.
  • To join the mailing list email Danielle Klette: dklette@bwh.harvard.edu.

National Radiologic Technology Week Lecture Series

  • Held annually on the week of November 8th.

Internal Department Lectures

  • Lectures held in the department can be submitted to the ASRT for credit approval by contacting the Senior Program Manager (1 – 2 weeks advanced notice required).
  • Ultrasound lectures can be approved by the Clinical Educator in that area (30 days advanced notice required).

Harvard Medical School Sonography Conferences and Symposium

  • An Advanced Sonography Symposium in OB/GYN is offered every other year.
  • Ultrasound Course: offered every other year. Attendance is subject to manager’s approval.
  • NOTE: Attendance at these events is generally on a rotating basis such that all sonographers have an equal opportunity. Attendance subject to manager’s approval.

Continuing Education Requirements

Current Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing Quality Requirement (CQR) - ARRT

  • This requirement applies only to initial registrations in any modality obtained from the ARRT on or after 1/1/2011.
  • For those technologists who are required to complete the CQR, they will need to do so every 10 years.
  • The ARRT has designed a “dashboard” on their website to help technologists navigate this process.
  • The CQR is three-steps:
    • Beginning at year 7, a technologist’s completion window opens.
      • Step 1: Complete your “Professional Profile” through the ARRT website.
      • Step 2: Complete the “Structured Self-Assessment” through the ARRT website.
      • Step 3: Complete the “CE Prescription” given to you based on the results of the assessment.
    • Your “CE Prescription” will be continuing education credits assigned to you in specific exam content categories and must be completed within the window between year 7 and 10.
      • The ARRT uses a coding system for approved continuing education activities to determine if a CE will meet your prescription requirements.
      • Note: Credits completed as a part of your CQR can also count for your biennium, so long as you are still meeting your specific biennium requirements.

Radiation Protection Credits

  • If you are trying to determine whether a continuing education activity would satisfy your Radiation Protection credits, here is some information that may help. Radiation protection category credits generally refer to those credits which cover the following topics:
    • Radiation physics, atomic physics, or nuclear physics
    • Radiation protection or ionizing radiation safety
    • Radiation dose measurement and evaluation for personnel
    • Radiobiology
    • Radiation Safety Campaigns – Image Gently or Image Wisely

Available Educational Resources

Regis Voucher Program

  • BWH Radiology Employees enrolled in a relevant program of study at Regis College (Healthcare Management, Healthcare Administration, Medical Imaging, or Bachelor’s Completion), will have a chance to apply for course vouchers annually.
  • Applications will be sent out each August for the September deadline.

Partners Tuition Reimbursement Program

  • Partners offers tuition reimbursement through PeopleSoft to all part-time and full-time employees. This can be used to help assuage the cost of Education. For more information, contact the Benefits Office.

Using College Courses for Continuing Education Credit

  • The Massachusetts Society of Radiologic Technologists (MSRT) does offer college course approval for those technologists in a relevant course of study.
  • A one semester 3 credit course in medical imaging can earn a technologist up to 48 credits for the biennium in which they take the course.

Learning an Advanced Modality

Advanced Modality Clinical Internships (CT/MR/Mammography)

  • Explore your certificate program options. You will want to have a program in mind prior to initiating the clinical placement process.
Note: Clinical internship hours cannot coincide with your current work schedule, and no compensation can be received.
  • If you want to learn more about any modality, shadow days can be set up outside of work hours through the Clinical Educator for that area.
Note: Certain times may not be available due to staffing or caseload.
  • Once you have a program in mind, you can contact the Clinical Educator and Senior Program Manager to see if clinical placement is available at the hospital.
Note: Clinical placement spots are limited.
  • Partners employees will need to meet with the Senior Program Director to sign an employee agreement prior to starting their clinical internship.
  • Arrangements for your clinical hours can be made with the Clinical Educator. Approval of these hours is dependent upon available staffing.
