Case-based Online Radiology Education

(CORE) is Aquifer's virtual patient program for medical students studying radiology.

In an era of cost-containment and increasing importance of evidence-based decision making, yet with increased reliance on imaging, having a basic understanding of the principles and applications of medical imaging is vital. The National Board of Medical Examiners has recognized this by increasing the imaging component of all USMLE exams. CORE currently includes 19 interactive virtual patient cases which encompass the learning objectives of the Association of University Radiologists (AUR) and the Alliance of Medical Student Educators in Radiology (AMSER) National Medical Student Radiology Curriculum.

CORE cases teach a patient-centered approach to imaging, foster self-directed and independent study, and build clinical problem-solving skills. They utilize the American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness criteria to teach an evidence-based approach to imaging and also link students to additional excellent interactive radiology resources on the Web.

CORE helps you learn. Covering nationally accepted curricula, CORE’s virtual patient cases are developed using a consistent, interactive approach. Focused on learning, not grades, cases offer a safe place for in-depth exploration and clinical reasoning practice. Frequent feedback keeps you on track.

Things to Know About Aquifer CORE Cases

Case Structure

Each case consists of multiple pages or “cards” (on average 23) containing information important to the diagnosis and management of the patient(s). The ‘Case Summary” card appears at the end of each case. You must click past this card to the “Summary of your case session” screen in order for the system to consider the case completed.

Engaged Learning

Learning requires engagement. Each CORE case includes an engagement meter to give you and your instructors an idea of how engaged you are in the learning process. This is not a grade. It’s a user-friendly, interactive, real-time tool that measures activity to help you integrate medical knowledge and improve your clinical reasoning. You can record key findings, list and then reorder potential diagnoses. The engagement meter updates as the case unfolds.
