At the Brigham, the radiologists interpreting the imaging studies performed on patients in the emergency department comprise the emergency radiology section. Emergency Radiologists, much like Emergency Medicine physicians are responsible for understanding and managing an extremely broad array of pathology ranging from high speed motor vehicle collisions (MVC) to acute strokes to ectopic pregnancy to run-of-the-mill community acquired pneumonia, hence the experience is never boring! The same modalities described above in the “core areas” are employed and interpreted here to evaluate acute (and sometimes not-so-acute) issues. This is a very busy section and critical patient management decisions must be made quickly and accurately (eg discharge vs admission, surgery vs medical management) based on the imaging findings. You should be aware that because this area is so busy, the bulk of your learning during this experience will likely come from observing rather than direct teaching.

The emergency radiology reading room is located within the Emergency Department.
