Responsibilities Overview

  • Sit in a circle in the reading room while an attending reviews cases on the TV monitor. The attending will teach while reading out each case. All trainees in the room rotate taking notes for each case. After a few hours the attending will stop and the trainees will all go to computers to dictate the cases for which they took notes.
  • Sometimes you will be asked to read cases independently then review with the attending.
  • Video swallow and barium esophagram cases occur throughout the day and the trainees rotate performing the fluoro exams. An attending watches either from the fluoro console or from the reading room.
  • There are dictation templates available on the hard drive or via the MGH intranet (which opens when you open Internet Explorer), but they aren’t great. It’s ok to free dictate if you are comfortable with reporting all pertinent negatives.
  • On Monday morning, coordinate with all other trainees to divide the early/late shifts. There’s a signup sheet in the reading room.
