What is Disability Insurance & why is this policy better?
Disability insurance compensates you in the event that you become injured and cannot work. You may be aware that Partners has been offering a group disability insurance plan to house staff as part of its benefits package, but that this prior plan had many drawbacks (such as lack of portability) and limited coverage. We have been working with HR in hopes of offering a better plan, and we are pleased to announce that HR has just negotiated a new plan offering that is:
- Portable: You are able to carry this plan with you after you leave Partners, and have the option to lock in your premium at a discounted level rate.
- Without medical underwriting: Unfortunately most disability insurance plans will look back at your past medical history and can potentially refuse to offer you a plan based on pre-existing diagnoses such as depression. You will not need to have a physical to get access to this plan, and there is no medical underwriting. One exception: they do ask on the application if you've been at work full time for the past 90 days without limitation due to sickness.
- Own-occupation: In the event of injury/disability, you will receive compensation if you’re unable to work as a physician in your given specialty. Insurance plans without this mean that you’ll only be compensated if unable to do any job (e.g. checkout person at a grocery store).
- Group-discount: You get a discount on the plan compared with what you would pay if you were shopping for this plan as an individual.
- With an increased benefit option: For graduating residents, when you receive a job offer letter, there is also an option to increase the base benefit from $5,000 per month to $15,000 per month.

- View your results and how your level of well-being compares to others in your demographic group. The comparative groups include more than 7,000 physicians, 1,700 residents and fellows, and 2,000 medical students. The resource categories provided are based on your score.
- Track your well-being over time by returning to the WBI and repeating your self-assessment. Resources are available any time, and the survey can be completed monthly.
